INTRODUCTION
Firefighters are faced with emotional needs that are very unique to their occupation and there is a
large percentage of firefighters that are struggling with career related stress. This can manifest
itself through higher divorce rates, addictions, financial difficulties, anxiety disorders, PTSD and
also depression. These factors have lead to an alarmingly high increase of firefighter suicides in
recent years. When these symptoms occur, a firefighter needs a support system in place that is
readily accessible from someone who is qualified and truly understands his or her circumstances.
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
This workshop involves a careful examination of a day in the life of a firefighter. Emphases are
on the education of basic understanding of a typical day at a firehouse, terminology, emotional
and physical stressors, role-play, tactical execution and discussion. There will be an exploration
of the differences between career firefighters, volunteer firefighters and paid-on-call firefighters.
The intent of this workshop is to develop quality relationships between the clinician world and the
fire service. Secondly, attendees will gain an enhanced comprehension of the fire service, to
better assist firefighters and their families when working with them in a professional setting.
ORGANIZATION
This is an interactive workshop in which topics are presented by the instructor. Attendees will be
expected to participate through discussion, role-play, as well as randomly selected attendees
participating in tactical exercise. When completed, attendees will have a better insight of how a
firefighter feels when dealing with them in their professional career. The tactical exercise will
consist of attendees dressing in the complete gear that a firefighter would wear, and perform a
mock search and rescue with a blacked-out mask.
THE WORKSHOP GOALS ARE:
• To introduce attendees to the life of a firefighter.
• To introduce attendees to the various emotional stressors that affect firefighters.
• To show the attendees, through tactical exercise, the physical stressors that the job of a
firefighter demands.
• To orient attendees to the basic terminology within the fire service.
• To provide attendees with opportunities to develop insight when dealing with firefighters
and their families on emotional and behavioral issues. The course will cover the following topics:
• Fire Service Organization
• Emotional Stressors
• Physical Stressors
• On-scene photographs (Note: some may contain graphic images)
• Terminology
• Statistics
• Tactical exercises
• Role-Play
• Group discussion
